Hydrogen Project

Global warming has been widely recognized to be the major challenge of mankind in the 21th century. The 2021´s IPCC report published different scenarios of global temperature rise within the next centuries and if the energy consumption behavior doesn’t change, extreme weather phenomena, water shortages and the expansion of inhabitable zones will increase in the future. Therefore, the EU set the goal of a carbon neutral Europe in 2050. In order to reach the goal, hydrogen has been named as an important part of the overall EU strategy. Green hydrogen, which is produced based on renewable energy, is considered as the ultimate contribution factor to achieve NetZero by 2050. However, due to limited resources and hydrogen infrastructure, the hydrogen demand can´t be met by green hydrogen alone, but blue and grey hydrogen are important as well. Thus, in the hydrogen project, the green hydrogen boom as well as the future of hydrogen infrastructure are analyzed and compared to the EU hydrogen strategy. The results will be published as a position paper. Apart from raising important issues concerning the future of hydrogen, the position of EYE within the green hydrogen boom will be highlighted in the paper.
